About
Youth, self-advocates obtain disability history in schools
This website is managed by Washington State Special Education Coalition volunteers, with the assistance of a grant from the Washington State Paralyzed Veterans of America.
The WSSEC (wssec.org) was proud to help youth with disabilities make specific contacts with legislators and get support and assistance from them and legislative staff to get this important bill passed. We are all especially grateful to Representative Pat Sullivan, (D – 47th Legislative District) sponsor of the companion bill in the House and to Senator Rosemary McAuliffe (D – 1st Legislative District) for sponsoring and guiding this bill (SB 6313) to final passage, which was unanimous.
Youth, educators, parents and other advocates from across the state testified and lobbied for the passage of the bill, which was signed by the Governor in March of 2008. Washington State joins Florida, North Carolina, Idaho, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Kentucky, Michigan, Montana and Rhode Island with similar initiatives.
